Third printing of this work on the British hunt. Includes depictions of fox hunting, horses and hounds.

London: The London Gazette, 1687.. 1687.. Very good. - Tall octavo [approximately 11-1/4 inches high by 6-1/2 inches wide], broadsheet newspaper printed in double columns. The newspaper has been folded once and is darkened around the edges & lightly soiled. Very good.

The newspaper was printed by "Tho. Newcomb in the Savoy". Of particular interest in this issue is the earliest record of horse-racing on Kersal Moor in the Manchester area of England. The following notice appears in the Advertisements column: "On Carsall Moore near Manchester in Lancashire on the 18th instant, a 20 [pound] plate will be run for to carry ten stone, and ride three heats, four miles each heat. And the next day another plate of 40 [pounds] will be run for at the same Moore, riding the same heats and carrying the same weight. The horses marks are to be given in four days before to Mr. William Swarbrick at the Kings Arms in Manchester."

Other notices in this column announce a new, illustrated translation of Aesop's Fables by Francis Barlow, and the London auction of "A Large and choice Collection of English Books", including books of the Common and Statute Law and related manuscripts.

The main feature of the issue consists of news of the Russo-Turkish war.

Three-quarter green cloth & tan cloth, titled in gilt on the front cover and the spine. The top edge is gilt. The covers are heavily rubbed and stained with wear to the corners. xiii, [i] & 645 pages, illustrated with textual illustrations, pictorial initials, and 132 [of 133] photogravures including portraits of eminent sportsmen, several with their horses and their hounds. Lacking the photogravure portrait of Mr. Votelin Heath. The hinges are cracked and the first signature is pulled. One photogravure portrait is foxed and a page is vertically creased. There is some occasional soiling with a few minor creases throughout. The bottom corners of the last several leaves are dampstained with some slight damage to the bottom corners of the last 6 leaves. Good.

Number 583 of a limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies.

Though the photogravures are portraits of eminent British Sportsmen, many are shown riding their distinguished horses. A few photogravures and many of the textual illustrations depict their dogs, including packs of foxhounds, harriers, beagles, stag hounds, drag hounds, etc.

Volume 2 only, complete in itself, with brief biographies of eminent British sportsmen from 1826 to 1908.

The plates are portraits and for the most part do not illustrate the sports they played. The sports played by the men represented in this volume include Cricket, Turf racing; Stag-hunting; Fox-hunting; Fishing; Boxing; Horse racing; etc.

Sara Chisolm "Chisie" Farrington was an internationally known angler with 7 world records to her credit. A pioneer in international big- game fishing, she wrote fishing articles for Harpers Bazaar, Vogue and Mademoiselle and authored "Women Can Fish". Her husband, Selwyin Kip Farrington, was a stockbroker who gave up a career on Wall Street to become one of the world's leading sports fishermen. The couple often traveled in the company of big game adventurers including Ernest Hemingway and Alfred Cassell. Dust jacket present. First Edition.
