First American edition. The book was first published in London in 1905.

The translation from the Russian is by J. K. M. Shirazi and the introduction is by G. K. Chesterton.

From the library of Walter Conrad Arensberg with his mystical bookplate mounted on the front pastedown. The bookplate was created by an artist with the initials A. L.

Walter Arensberg [1878- 1954] was an American art collector, critic and poet. He was close to Duchamp and assembled the largest and most significant collection of Dada art. He published several volumes of Symbolist poetry. He had a particular interest in cryptography and was the author of The Cryptography of Shakespeare [1922] and The Cryptography of Dante [1921]. In the latter book, he cites the quotation from The Divine Comedy [Purgatory, iii 76] which appears below the illustration on the bookplate as an example--one of many--of Dante's string ciphers in which the first and last letter of the string are the first and last letter of the name: Ditene dove lA moNTagna giacE.
