Newburgh, NY: August 6th, 1886. 1886. Good Signed
AUTOGRAPH LETTER BY CIVIL WAR MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT WILLIAM D. DICKEY - Over 30 words penned on his 9-3/8 inch high by 5-7/8 inch wide ruled "William D. Dickey, Attorney and Counselor at Law" stationery. In response to the recipient, Colonel Dickey writes: "I remember your father as a good faithful soldier who in a modest way, did what he could to keep down the rebellion." Signed in full "William D. Dickey. A few letters are smudged. Folded for mailing with a small hole along one fold, not affecting the text. Good. Colonel William D. Dickey (1845-1924). A graduate of Newburgh Academy, William D. Dickey began the study of law just before the Civil War. He enlisted at the age of 18 and fought in numerous skirmishes and 20 general engagements up to and including Lee's surrender. In 1864, while serving as a Captain with Battery M of the Fifteenth New York Artillery Company, he distinguished himself at at the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia when he refused to leave the field after being wounded and led an assault on enemy works. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for this action. He was promoted to Major and subsequently, in recognition of his distinguished valor, he was conferred the brevets of Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel by the President. He entered Albany Law School after the war and was elected a delegate to New York's Constitutional Convention. He was highly active in promoting local enterprises in Newburgh, NY, including the Newburgh Electric Street Railway Company and the Newburgh & Orange Electric Street Railway Company and was instrumental in the building of the Palatine Hotel.
