Among the contents is the first appearance of Peter Matthiessen's story "Lumumba Lives" illustrated by Paul Davis, considered by many the best story in Matthiessen's collection "On the River Styx". There are also contributions by John Lahr, Molly Ivins, Armond White and Terry McMillan.

Wigwag was founded by Alexander "Lex" Kaplen, who worked at the New Yorker. Wigwag eschewed celebrity coverage in favor of personal and literary writing. This test issue appeared in the summer of 1988 and the formal debut of the magazine was in October 1989. It attracted talented writers and its art director was the illustrator Paul Davis, whose illustrations for the Matthiessen story appear in this issue. Despite being financially successful and reaching a circulation of nearly 200,000 the magazine ceased publication in 1991 when the Gulf War broke out and the economy entered recession.
