HART CRANE: A RICH BOLD ETCHING OF THE POET HART CRANE, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST CHARLES WELLS, (Crane, Hart). Wells, Charles
159 (Crane, Hart). Wells, Charles HART CRANE: A RICH BOLD ETCHING OF THE POET HART CRANE, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST CHARLES WELLS
Circa [1972]. [1972]. Very good Signed
Circa [1972].. [1972].. Very good. - sc - A beautiful and evocative portrait of the poet Hart Cane, author of "The Bridge", on heavy 25 inch high by 19-3/4 inch wide creamy white Fabriano paper. The 17-5/8 inch high by 14-7/8 inch wide image portrays Hart Crane peering out from the dark beneath a wooden plank (possibly the trestle of a bridge). A bent nail protrudes from a knot hole in the wood. Titled "Hart Crane" in pencil under the image at left, numbered "23/77" and signed in pencil by the artist Charles Wells at right. The inner margin is slightly darkened, likely from having been framed and there are small remnants of archival tape near the top corners of the verso. Near fine.

Limited edition of 77 numbered etchings signed by the artist.

Born in New York City in 1935, the printmaker and sculptor Charles Wells began his career as a stonecutter in Italy. A student and apprentice of Leonard Baskin, he subsequently had the opportunity to work alongside the great Italian carvers. Starting with carvings from stone, his work evolved over the course of his career to incorporate large-scale wood carvings, eventually growing into a synthesis of the two. It is said that his sculptures of angel-like figures appear to be emerging from their folded wings. His etchings are characterized by assymetrical faces and masterful lighting.
