The British academic, statesman and economist Henry Fawcett (1833-1884) was blinded in a shooting accident when he was 25 years old. Despite the lost of his sight he continued with his studies, especially in the field of economics. Taking part in the Oxford Evolution Debate in 1860, he responded to a question as to whether he thought Bishop Wilberforce had actually read Darwin's "Origin of Species" by replying "Oh no, I would swear he never read a word of it" and went on to defend the logic behind Darwin's theories at the next meeting. He published several works including the "Manual of Political Economy", "The Economic Position of the British Labourer" and "Labour and Wages", becoming professor of Political Economy at Cambridge and later Rector at Glasgow University. Elected as Member of Parliament for Brighton in 1865, he campaigned for women's suffrage and met Elizabeth Garrett, to whom he unsuccessfully proposed. He later married her sister Millicent.
