37 (Titania's Palace). Wilkinson, Sir Nevile. (1869-1940). British Amy Officer and designer of the dollhouse "Titania's Palace". AN UTTERLY CHARMING AUTOGRAPH LETTER WRITTEN TO BOOKBINDERS SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE ON BEHALF OF TITANIA "QUEEN OF THE FAIRIES" AND SIGNED BY HER PALACE'S DESIGNER SIR NEVILE WILKINSON.
[London]: January 1st, 1932. 1932. Very good Signed
- Letter penned in blue ink filling 3-1/2 sides of a sheet of cream letterhead folded to form 4 sides, each approximately 7 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide, with Wilkinson's address printed in blue at the top of the first side. Signed "Nevile Wilkinson". The corners & edges of the letter are lightly creased. Folded twice for mailing. Very good

A delightful letter written by Wilkinson to bookbinders Sangorski & Sutcliffe for Titania, "Queen of the Fairies": "Her Iridescence wishes me to ascertain, on her behalf, whether the little volume which Mr. Vaughan brought this evening, is to be considered as a gift from the firm of Sangorski and Sutcliffe to her Private Library at the Palace or if it is only intended as a loan....Needless to say she would be quite delighted to accept the little volume to add to her already famous collection: while on the other hand she quite realizes that it would be a costly gift and will quite understand if it is to be considered a loan..."

British Army officer Sir Nevile Wilkinson [1869-1940] commissioned the miniature castle from James Hicks & Sons, Irish Cabinet Makers, for his daughter Gwendolen, who claimed to have seen a fairy running under the roots of a tree near their home and felt sorry for the fairies who had to live in underground caves. The palace, designed by Wilkinson and hand-built from 1907 to 1922, had 18 rooms and salons and contained hand-carved mahogany furniture. In 1978, Titania's Palace was auctioned at Christies U.K. but was lost in a bidding war to the Danish toy maker Legoland. From 2007 the palace has been displayed at Egeskov Castle in Denmark.

The Mr. Vaughan referred to in the letter is Alexander James Vaughan, a craftsman employed by the royal bookbinders Sangorski & Sutcliffe. He designed miniature buildings for Queen Mary's dollhouse. First Edition.
