Colonel Robert Green Ingersoll [1833-1899], a Civil War veteran, was a highly popular orator and political leader, though his agnosticism, his support for the Free Thought movement and his views on religion, slavery and women's rights precluded him from any high political office. This lecture addresses the intellectual development of man as displayed in a row of human skulls; declares that "orthodoxy is that which rots, and heresy is that which grows forever"; and defends the right to liberty of men, women and children. The pamphlet is an early edition of the lecture.

Writing during World War II, the author states in his last chapter: "This war, if rightly understood, will teach us two things in one lesson: it directs our attention to the ultimate basis of human freedom and its transcendental origin (for this is the target of the totalitarian attack); at the same time, it opens our eyes to the relative or instrumental value of those intermediate realities which compose our world and among which the state occupies an important place. It is a lesson both in faith and in realism." Dust jacket present. First Edition.

With an introduction by Paul Janet.

From the library of James Jerome Gibson with his signature and the date 1925 on the front endpaper.

The American psychologist, James Jerome Gibson (1904-1979) is considered one of the most important psychologists in the field of visual perception. Rejecting Hermann von Helmholtz's classical approach and behaviorism, he "pioneered the idea that observers sample information from the outside visual world using an active perceptual system rather than passively receiving input through their senses and then processing this input to obtain a construction of the world". Gibson met the Gestalt psychologist Kurt Koffka while teaching at Smith college. Though he didn't embrace Gestalt psychology he did share Koffka's view that "the problems of perception were the central problems of psychology".

Charles Fourier [1772-1837] was a French philosopher and an influential early socialist thinker, later associated with "utopian socialism". Fourier deemed poverty, not inequality, the principal cause of disorder in society. He proposed to eradicate it by sufficiently high wages and by a "decent minimum" for those unable to work. He was a supporter of women's rights, believing that all important jobs should be open to women on the basis of skill and aptitude. He was credited with inventing the word "feminism" in 1837. Writing before the advent of the term "homosexuality", Fourier also held that both men and women have a wide range of sexual needs and preferences which may change throughout their lives, including same-sex sexuality and "androgenite'. He argued that all sexual expressions should be enjoyed as long as no one is abused and that "affirming one's difference" could actually enhance social integration. His concern was to liberate every human individual, man, woman and child, in two ways: through education and through the liberation of human passion.
