The covers are very lightly soiled and creased. 8 pages, including blanks, consisting of a title page, a one-page preface, and the colophon, with an attractive 3-7/8 inch high by 2-1/2 inch wide bookplate mounted in the center of the pamphlet. Very good.

First edition, first printing of "A BRookplate for Bruce Rogers".

Limited edition of 100 copies. "100 copies of this little gem of graphic art, fifty of which were presented to Mr. Rogers on his birthday, have been produced as Item Number Nine of the Maverick Press of New York City, 1936".

According to Will Ransom "Selective Check List of Press Books", Earl H. Emmons "In deference to Mr. Goudy, who objected when uninstructed people added a k to Frederic, Emmons, when he printed any of Fred Goudy's work, changed the spelling of Maverick to Maveric." [page 122]. Its unclear why he would spell it thus on the title page of this little booklet.

- Broadside, 10-7/8 inches high by 5 inches wide, titled "Salute at 87 / May 14,1957" followed by the initials "B R" in red within a decorative green frame. The author's name "S. R. Shapiro" is printed below the tribute. Fine.

Limited edition of 87 copies printed by Fridolf Johnson at The Mermaid Press.

The tribute lists printers, "Gutenberg, Jenson, Caxton, Aldus, Estienne [et al]" and concludes: "SpirItual ancestors all, whose greatest living successor you are." The 87th birthday tribute is dated May 14, 1957, a week before Bruce Rogers died on May 21, 1957.

Bruce Rogers [1870-1957] was an American typographer and type designer, sometimes acclaimed as the greatest book designer of the twentieth century. Rogers was known for his "classical" style of design, rejecting modernism, never using asymmetrical arrangements, rarely using sans serif type faces and favoring roman faces such as Caslon and his own Centaur.

Solomon R. Shapiro, who wrote the tribute, was a New York City bookseller, a close friend of Rogers and an expert on his publications.

The book label of Kenneth G. Vorhees, Jr., President and CEO of the company is mounted on the front pastedown with "Printer's Proof", "22 May '94" and "5/25" penned in ink on the label. To the right of the label is an illegible inscription, possibly signed by Kenneth Vorhees.

The binding is lightly rubbed & bumped with a tiny scratch to the cloth of the front cover & creasing to the bottom corner of the rear cover. lxxxviii pages plus colophon, unopened. There is an owner's bookplate tipped onto the front pastedown. The book is lightly cracked at page lvi and the rear endpaper & pastedown are darkened with a small stain to the bottom edge of the endpaper. There is damage to the bottom corner of the rear pastedown with the cloth creased & small pieces out of the paper & out of the bottom edges of 3 rear leaves. Despite its flaws, the contents of the book, with Ricketts' elaborate floral decorations, are bright & very attractive.

The colophon reads: "This edition of Julius Caesar has been seen through the press by T. S. Moore. Decorated by Charles Ricketts under whose supervision the book has been printed at the Ballantyne Press M.D.C.C.C.C."
