The author notes that the young men and women who grew up during Prohibition, "the era of bathtub gin and bootleg whiskey", know nothing about wines and liquor. "Their idea of hospitality, in many instances, is to place a full cocktail shaker, a full bottle of Rye or Scotch before their guests and let them entertain themselves. Now that prohibition is but a forgotten nightmare, they, too, will learn that to indulge well, but not freely, is the inherent right of every American."

Prohibition ended on December 5, 1933. This first printing was published in November 1933.
