The front endpaper is rubbed & lightly soiled with creasing & a small piece out, possibly where a label has been removed. 1 signature of the Appendix is detached. An illustrated newspaper cutting commenting on the book is glued to the front pastedown. There are numerals printed in gilt on the spine suggesting that the book is ex-library. Good.

The period covered by the book runs from 1700-1825. Appendix B is a chronological list of children's books published during this timeframe.

The frontispiece is loose with the edges chipped & roughed. The corner of the color plate opposite page 145 is creased and there is some rippling, possibly due to humidity, to the color plates opposite pages 224 and 241. Good.
