Desire Charnay [1828-1915] was a traveler and writer of considerable fame in the late nineteenth century. He took the first photographs of the Mayan ruins in Mexico in 1859. Later he made many other photographs in Mexico and in Madagascar, Java and Australia. These photographs have been rescued from oblivion by Keith Davis's account of Charnay's life and work. The richly reproduced photographs include portraits of Philip Glass, film directors Michelangelo Antonioni, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Bob Rafelson, her husband experimental author and screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer, Sam Shepard, author & professor Lyneise Wiliams, Robert Mapplethorpe, Patti Smith, Australian actress Belinda Bauer, Suzanne Fenn, Octavio, Divine, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Ashbery, venerable Lopon Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche, venerable Trulshik Rinpoche (Nyingma), minimalist sculptor Richard Serra, Gerard Malanga, Lucinda Childs, interior designer Paul Siskin , German countertenor Klaus Nomi, jewelry designer Masha Archer, model and underground movie actress Maxime de la Falaise, etc. The American photographer Lynn Davis (born 1944) is best known for her large-scale black & white photographs. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Lynn Davis studied at the University of Colorado and the University of Minnesota, receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1974. She began her career as an apprentice to Berenice Abbott and her first exhibition in 1979 was held at New York's International Center of Photography with Robert Mapplethorpe. Her prints appear in the permanent collections of New York's Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among many others. The J. Paul Getty Museum held an exhibition of Davis' photographs in 1999 and Tucson's Center for Creative Photography held a solo show of her work titled "Africa" that same year. Lynn Davis is married to the experimental writer and screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer (author of "Nog"). THE BOOK HAS NEVER BEFORE BEEN OFFERED TO THE PUBLIC.

Eva Besnyo [1910-2003] was born in Budapest and after three years of study in Berlin, she left for the Netherlands in 1932. In Berlin she had mastered the photographic style of the New Realism and her work recorded the street life of European cities including Budapest, Berlin, Brussels, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Paris and Milan. Her archive is housed at the Maria Austria Institute in Amsterdam.

The text is in Dutch with an English translation of Tineke de Ruiter's introductory essay in the rear. Dust jacket present. First Edition.
