236 (Zapf, Hermann); St. Francis of Assisi "UN CANTO DI SAN FRANCESCO D'ASSISI"
Frankfurt / Main: D. Stempel A.G. [1953]. [1953]. Very good
Frankfurt / Main: D. Stempel A.G. [1953].. [1953].. Very good. - sc A 39-1/2 inch high by 27-1/4 inch wide broadside on creamy white paper depicting Hermann Zapf's Palatino font. The broadside titled "Un Canto di San Francesco d'Assisi" is followed by 22 lines from Francis of Assisi's "Laudes Creaturarum" boldly printed in black in Hermann Zapf's Palatino type with a translation into German by Gotthard de Beauclair printed in red in a smaller font under each line. Descriptive text about the broadside is printed at the bottom of the verso: "Der Sonnengessang des Heiligen Franz von Assisi, ins Deutsche Ubertragen von Gotthard de Beauclair / Schrift: Palatino von Hermann Zapf / Schrittgiesserei D. Stempel AG Frankfurt am Main". The broadside is very lightly creased with minor chips along the edges with some very minor spotting at the top. A beautiful typographic broadside.

From the estate of the calligrapher Paul Standard, a close friend of Zapf's, who has dated the broadside "1953" in pencil at the bottom.

Francis of Assisi composed the canto "Laudes Creaturarem" between 1222 and 1226. The canto, an autograph fragment of which is preserved in Assisi, is probably a period Italian translation from the Latin done into rhymed prose.
