The spines of the Vol.1 & 2 dust jackets are slightly sunned & a label has been partially removed from the head of the Vol. 1 jacket spine. The spine of the Vol. 3 case is creased & slightly sunned & there is a sticker on the rear panel . There is some light rubbing to the slipcase & the top & bottom panels are starting to detach at the edges with some light staining to the bottom panel. 271 pages plus colophon; 195 pages plus colophon; and 23 folding maps printed in black & red. Vols. 1 & 2 are illustrated in color and black & white. There is some soiling to the Vol. 1 fore edge. There is a light crease to the Vol. 2 title page & a tear & creasing to the following leaf with a small piece out of the bottom corner. All in all, a near fine set in a very good slipcase. Dust jacket present.

Printed self-wraps bound with strips of maroon leather along the spines. The first pamphlet is a mechanically reproduced reprint of Leppmann's paper in German, the second is an English translation of the paper. Both pamphlets have been laid by a previous owner into a handsome red cloth binding backed with red leather & titled in gilt on the spine with a gilt-lettered red leather label on the front cover. The unused space in the binding has been filled with unbound sheets of yellow & blue paper. The binding is housed in a red paper covered slipcase. Pages 219-229; & [vii], 17 & 2 pages. Near fine.

RICA (Researches in Campanian Archaeology) states in an introductory list of translations it has issued, that these translations are of articles and documents relating to Campanian archaeology which are not generally familiar to scholars in the field. "A few of these we have distributed from the United States to a selected group of interested institutions with the traditional compliments of the University of Texas at Austin". This copy has mounted on the front pastedown the book label of The Van Der Poel Collection of Campanian Archeology. ["Campanian" refers to a stage on the geologic time scale].

Leppman's paper, which was presented at the Modern Language Association of America conference in Chicago in December 1963, was published in The German Quarterly, Volume XXXVII Number 3, May 1964, a publication issued by the American Association of Teachers of German, Appleton, Wisconsin.

Leppmann writes that Goethe visited Pompeii and comments that in "Italienische Reise" "Goethe has described his impressions of Pompeii and Herculaneum so concisely that they can be reproduced here without abridgement". The excavations at Pompeii had begun only half a century before Goethe's visit.
