Despite his intimate friendship with the British royal family, and his own British sympathies, the British orchestrated and then acclaimed the 1941 coup which overthrew Prince Paul of Yugoslavia's Regency, declaring it an act of liberation. Prince Paul was called a traitor and a quisling and the British kept him and his family under house arrest in Africa for the rest of the war. This book represents a major reassessment of his place in European history. Neil Balfour was formerly Prince Paul's son-in-law. Dust jacket present.

51 Banerji, Sasipada (1840-1924). Indian champion of Women's rights & education, he founded several girl's schools. A leader of India's Temperance movement and of workers' rights. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by the INDIAN CHAMPION OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS & EDUCATION, SASIPADA BANERJI expressing his pleasure at being appointed to the office of a Corresponding Secretary by the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science.
Bristol, England, November 19th, 1871. 1871. Very good Signed
- Over 130 words penned on both sides of 7-1/4 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide "Red Lodge House" embossed stationery. Sasipada Banerji thanks the recipient for "forwarding the resolution of the Council expressing their sympathy in my works in India". He goes on to express his honor at being appointed to the office of Corresponding Secretary by the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science, and asks "in what way I can best serve your Committee in the capacity of their Secretary at Calcutta". Signed "Sasipada Banerji". Folded for mailing with a tiny hole to the center. Glue stains along the top edge of the second page attest to the letter having once been tipped into an album. A blank leaf, once attached to the letter was removed in the distant past with the loss of the last 2 letters of Banerji's signature. Very good.

The Indian social worker and champion of women's rights and education Sasipada Banerji (1840-1924) worked towards labor welfare in India. He was involved in the social reform movement in Bengal through the Brahmo Samaj, a social component of Brahmoism, the monotheistic reformist and renaissance movement of Hinduism. An advocate of women's rights, Banerji established several girls' schools and founded the first women's journal in Bengali. A close associate of Mary Carpenter whom he met during her visit to India in 1866, Banerji was a member of the Indian Temperance Movement. At Mary Carpenter's invitation, Sasipada Banerji and his wife Rajkumari visited England in 1871. The "Asiatic" of London declared that Rajkumari was "the first Hindu lady who has ever visited England". In 1870 Banerji founded the worker's organization Sramajivi Samiti and established the first Indian journal of the working class, the newspaper Bharat Sramajivi.

Bramo Samaj was created in Calcutta in 1828 by Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Debendranath Tagore as a reformation of Brahmanism. One of the most influential religious movements in India, it gave rise to the Bengal Renaissance and pioneered religious, social and educational advances in 19th Century Hindu communities.

53 Barthelemy-Saint-Hilaire, Jules. (1805-1895). French statesman and philosopher who translated Aristotle. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY FRENCH STATESMAN AND PHILOSOPHER JULES BARTHELEMY-SAINT-HILAIRE.
Paris: 6 October, 1877. 1877. Good Signed
Paris: 6 October, 1877.. 1877.. Good. - Approximately 119 words penned in black ink on a 8-1/4 inch high by 5- 1/4 inch wide sheet of bluish-gray paper. Signed "B. S Hilaire". The paper is lightly bumped with its edges slightly faded. There is a small tear to the right edge. Folded twice for mailing. Good.

Barthelemy-Saint- Hilaire writes in French to an English gentleman who has been referred to him by Lord Houghton. He apologizes for failing to find him at a crowded function. He explains that he had ordered the guards to make sure that the gentleman got past the door, and had also brought with him a friend who spoke very good English. He says that he is completely at the gentleman's disposal if he can be of use in acquainting him with "nos affaires politiques", which at the moment are very complicated.

Jules Barthelemy- Saint-Hilaire [1805-1895] was a French statesman and philosopher. In his early years he worked for the Ministry of Finance and was an active journalist. After 1830 he gave up politics in order to devote himself to the study of ancient philosophy, undertaking a translation of Aristotle which occupied him for most of his life. After the revolution of 1848 he was elected a republican deputy from the department of Seine-et Oise. Following further political upheavals he was apppointed senator for life. From 18800-81 he was minister of foreign affairs in the cabinet of Jules Ferry.
