The boards are rubbed with part of the surface of the front board rubbed away & with a small piece out of the top edge of the rear board. The leather is rubbed with the spine darkened & with the bottom corner of the rear cover chipped. xvi & 296 pages. 3 engraved plates, including a frontispiece, & an extra pictorial title page by Dalziel. There are wormholes in the pastedowns & endpapers with occasional minor worming to the text pages. There is staining to the front pastedown & very light dampstaining to the versos of the frontispiece & pictorial title. Good only.

First English edition.

Ex -"Kandy Library" with the library's name stamped in gilt on the tail of the spine & its blind stamp on the title page.

This edition is a reprint, except for the addition of two poems, "To An English Friend" and "The Ploughman". First Edition.

The covers are rubbed and soiled with wear and chipping to the corners and head and tail of the spine. 465 pages, illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, a pictorial title page, 4 textual engravings and 6 full-page plates by F.O.C. Darley. There is foxing throughout with dampstaining to the edges and corners of several pages. Good.

Uncommon.

Handsomely bound in full brown morocco, titled in gilt with decorations in black between raised bands on the spine and with the gilt title centered within elaborate floral decorations embossed in black within a double-ruled black frame on both covers. All edges are gilt. Marbled endpapers further enhance the binding. The covers are rubbed and scuffed with wear to the leather at the top of the front joint. 400 pages, illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of James Fenimore Cooper engraved by W.E. Marshall, an additional frontispiece engraving of Otsego Hall, 38 steel engraved plates by F.O.C. Darley and J. Hamilton, 7 wood engravings and 120 head & tail piece vignettes by Darley. The front hinge is starting to crack along the top. There is scattered foxing throughout. Despite its flaws, an attractive book.

A handsome volume on James Fenimore Cooper with excerpts from his novels, each with notes by his daughter Susan Fenimore Cooper, superbly illustrated with steel and wood engravings.

The calendar is housed in a printed yellow paper covered cardboard box with a rectangular section cut out of the lid to reveal the illustration on the calendar cover. There is a crease & crack to the inside of the lid of the box with a gift inscription penned along the bottom margin of the lid. Near fine in a very good box.

Calendar No. 5896. The Dodge Publishing Company issued six different calendars in 1940 with "helpful thoughts--a constant reminder of friendship and inspiration throughout the year" printed on each page. This 1941 calendar includes quotations from Hume, Ruskin, Christina Rossetti and Robert Louis Stevenson, among others.
