LETTER SIGNED by MARY LINWOOD, Linwood, Mary (1755-1845). Needlework artist, novelist & composer
46 Linwood, Mary (1755-1845). Needlework artist, novelist & composer LETTER SIGNED by MARY LINWOOD
Leicester May 4th, 1841. 1841. Good Signed
Leicester May 4th, 1841.. 1841.. Good. - sc Over 115 words penned in a secretarial hand on both sides of a 9 inch high by 7-3/8 inch wide sheet with an attached blank leaf. An embossed blind stamp decorates the lower corner of the blank leaf. In her letter, penned for her by a secretary, Mary Linwood thanks Mrs. Bromly [?] for her hospitality and "gracious reception", and goes on to express her pleasure that "the young Ladies retained so lively a recollection of me...." Among her many accomplishments Mary Linwood was, for many years, the schoolmistress of a private school which later became known as the Mary Linwood Comprehensive School. Signed by her "M. Linwood" in black ink. Folded for mailing, there are a couple of tiny chips to the edges of the folds and the lower few inches of the left edge have been reinforced with clear tape. Remnants of gray felt paper along the verso of the blank leaf would suggest that the letter was apparently once mounted or tipped-in to an album. Good.

A renaissance woman, Mary Linwood (1755-1845) wore many hats. A needlework artist who made her first embroidered picture at thirteen years of age, she took over from her mother as schoolmistress of a private boarding school which was later known as the Mary Linwood Comprehensive School, composed at least one oratorio and wrote several novels. Her Oratorio "David's First Victory" dedicated to Queen Adelaide was performed in 1840 and her embroidery and needlework brought her to the notice of the royal family and Queen Charlotte in particular who invited her to Windsor Castle to show her work. For nearly 75 years, Mary Linwood created worsted and crewel embroidered copies of old masters. She exhibited in Russia and her copy of a painting by Salvator Rosa (1615- 1673) sold for more than the original work. Her painstaking work was such that she took ten years to complete "The Judgement of Cain", a work of her own design.
