James Wells of the Newberry Library notes in his Foreword that Da Boll was one of the most distinguished alumni of the Newberry Calligraphy Study Group, a band of students attracted to the Library in 1942 when it acquired the Ricketts Collection of writing-books and calligraphic manuscripts. "The Library and the world of fine writing profited a great deal from their use of the collection." In addition to Wells, the contributors include Paul Standard and Warren Chappell, among others.
