AUTOGRAPH LETTER ON "GENERAL REGISTER OFFICE" LETTERHEAD SIGNED BY BRITISH EPIDEMIOLOGIST WILLIAM FARR., Farr, William. (1807-1883). British epidemiologist who was a founder of medical statistics.
42 Farr, William. (1807-1883). British epidemiologist who was a founder of medical statistics. AUTOGRAPH LETTER ON "GENERAL REGISTER OFFICE" LETTERHEAD SIGNED BY BRITISH EPIDEMIOLOGIST WILLIAM FARR.
[London]: October 25, 1870. 1870. Very good Signed
- Letter penned in black ink & filling 1 side of an approximately 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide sheet of the "General Register Office, Somerset House" letterhead with its seal stamped in blind at the top. Signed "W. Farr". On the verso, there are small glue stains & a fragment of paper adhering to the top corners where the letter has been removed from an album, causing slight creasing to the top corners of the recto. Folded twice for mailing. Very good.

WIliam Farr writes in support of a Mr. Hastings: "He will be an excellent candidate." Farr probably refers to George Woodyatt Hastings who was a politician and chairman of the "National Association for Promotion of Social Science" [1868-1883].

William Farr [1807-1883] was an important British epidemiologist, regarded as one of the founders of medical statistics. Dr. Thomas Wakley, editor of the Lancet, and Sir James Clarke who had co-authored an article on consumption with Farr, were so impressed by him that when the Office of the Registrar General was established, they both recommend Farr for the post of Compiler of Abstracts. The Registrar General's Office was created to track births and deaths in England and Wales. As Compiler of Abstracts, Farr created the first national statistics system, using it to analyze causes of deaths and assessments of mortality by occupation. The London Statistical Society recognized his achievements by electing him as their president in 1871. He made countless contributions to epidemiology, adding to the knowledge of such diseases as cholera and helping to control its spread.

45 Foxe, Arthur N., M.D THE OATH OF HIPPOCRATES. Reprinted from the Psychiatric Quarterly Vol. 19, pages 17-25, January, 1945. (Cover title)
Utica, NY: State Hospitals Press, 1945. 1945. Fine
Utica, NY: State Hospitals Press, 1945.. 1945.. Fine. - Octavo, softcover bound in printed gray wraps. 9 pages. Near fine.

In discussing the relevance of the oath to modern medicine, Foxe writes: "The oath on deleterious or mischievous regimens is of obvious import todady as is that on poisons. The oath on abortions may find more lax attitudes today, but one might hope that abortions, some day, will be replaced by the adopting out of unwanted children rather than their destruction...." He goes on to suggest that "it is now possible to rewrite the oath in a form more comprehensible to the modern Mind. It becomes a noble oath, the culmination of Greek medicine, not so nearly approached before or again." His new version of the oath reads in part: "I swear to join with the forces that heal in wound and disease, for man and mankind, with an attitude of courage, kindliness, protectiveness, cheerful serenity and dignity....I will do that only which is for the benefit of my patient and not that which is deleterious and mischievous.... I will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked, nor suggest any such counsel. I will not advise abortion unless the life of the patient be truly jeopardized, but rather will advise adoption if necessary...."
