A meteorologist, cartographer, and geologist, he was also a historian and educator. Nicknamed "Pathfinder of the Seas" he was considered the "Father of Modern Oceanography and Naval Meteorology". His work "The Physical Geography of the Sea", first published in 1855, was the first extensive and comprehensive book to be published on the subject. His studies of thousands of ships' logs and charts led to his many important contributions to charting winds and currents as well as ocean lanes for passing ships. He resigned his position at the outbreak of the Civil War to join the Confederacy. After the war, he taught at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington.
