Leather-bound hardcovers, both volumes are bound in full tan calf with raised bands on the spine. The covers are detached and the rear cover of the second volume is lacking. The brittle spines are heavily chipped and have nearly perished. xxxix, [i] and 450 pages; and [ii], 449 & [1] pages, extra-illustrated with a total of 109 plates, mostly portraits and a few views, and 3 folding facsimiles. The front endpapers of both volumes are detached and chipped and the edges of the rear endpaper of the second volume are chipped. Despite the bindings, the contents are in remarkably good condition with some occasional minor foxing and offsetting. This set, usually illustrated with only 6 plates and a folding facsimile is here extra-illustrated with 103 plates, mostly engraved portraits with a few views and 2 additional folding facsimiles. In addition to Lord Byron and Leigh Hunt, the plates include portraits of Lady Noel Byron, The Countess Guiccioli, Thomas Moore, Samuel Johnson, Addish, Miss Chaworth, Alexander Pope, Schiller, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, Leonardo Da Vinci, Sir Thomas More, Goethe, Keats, George Chapman, Angelica Kauffman, Voltaire, Mrs. Siddons, Titian, etc. with views of "Athens, and the Island of Egina", the coast of "Gibraltar", "View of the Palace of the Tuilleries, with the First Consul going to attend [a] Parade", etc. A superbly illustrated set of particular interest for the plates.

"Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice" [1919] was a fantastical account of its hero's mythological and amorous adventures by James Branch Cabell and was the subject of a celebrated obscenity case. The case was won by Cabell and his publisher Robert M. McBride [the publisher of the book at hand]. Cover devotes himself to tracing Cabell's sources in earlier literature.
