Mother Goose rhymes adapted to deal with such historical facts and figures as the Declaration of Independence, Daniel Boone, James Watt, the Revolutionary War, etc. The music is by Louis Gottschalk.

The covers are bumped & rubbed with a small stain to the front cover. The gilt titling on the spine is faded. The head & tail of the spine are chipped & there is a small hole in the cloth of the mid-section. There are short tears to the joints. 364 pp. B&W frontispiece & pictorial title, plates & tail-pieces by Grandville and others, engraved by J. W. Orr. The front hinge is cracked & the front endpaper is lacking. There is an owner's small stamp on the flyleaf & there is scattered staining & light foxing.

Many of the stories are about animals and the book is wonderfully illustrated with engravings of animals in human dress.

Titled at the top with credits along the bottom, the poster is signed in black ink by Charles Santore and dated "Sept. 21, 1997" at top left. Folded twice, else very good.

Very good. - Miniature chapbook [3-3/4 inches high by 2-1/4 inches wide], softcover bound in printed green wrappers sewn with cream cord with a woodcut vignette of a basket on a mat of grass on the front cover & a publisher's catalog on the rear cover. There is a tiny brown mark to the front cover. 16 pages. The front cover vignette is reproduced on the title page. Also with 3 full-page woodcuts & 1 textual woodcut & 1 head-piece in black & white. Very good.

"Second Series,--No. 6" is printed at the top of the front cover. The publisher's address on the title page is "88 John Street" The company probably printed new covers but kept the old title page when it moved to William Street.

Following "The Basket of Strawberries is the story "Lucy Luckless".

Three of the woodcuts are signed "W. Howland", William Howland [1822-1869] practiced wood engraving for about thirty years. He was among a group of American wood engravers who worked in the early days of the magazine and illustrated book industry in New York City, along with Childs, Bobbett, Herrick and Nathaniel Orr. He was one of the engravers who worked on the Adams and Chapman Bible published in 1843, and he made engravings for the American Tract Society publications.
