Berytus, 1935.. 1935.. Good. - Small quarto [11-1/4 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide], softcover bound in printed gray wraps. The covers are detached & are chipped, darkened & creased around the edges with a tear to the top edge of the rear wrap. Pages 25-33. Illustrated with a black-and-white folding plate [architectural plan]. The page corners are bumped & their edges are darkened with some light creasing & with occasional staining. There is a horizontal crease to the wraps & to each leaf where the pamphlet has been folded. Good working copy.

Inscribed by the author on the front wrap to archaeologist Clark Hopkins.

Offprint from Berytus II, 1935, p. 25-33. The text is in German.

Armin von Gerkan [1885-1969] was a Baltic German classical archaeologist and a member of a Baltic aristocratic family. He was an expert in archaeoloical building research and a seminal figure in ancient architectural history. The present text is a study of the city wall of Palmyra, Syria.

The binding is rubbed & bumped. The head & tail of the spine are chipped with small pieces out. There is a 2-inch tear to the top of the front joint with a small tear to the cloth of the adjacent corner of the front cover. xxii & 324 pages. The endpapers are darkened. There is soiling to the prelims & occasional light foxing, staining & soiling in the remainder of the book. 11 color plates & heliogravures with tissue guards, including a color frontispiece, & 48 black-and-white plates. Good.

First edition.

The authors published their plan for the excavation of Herculaneum after the Italian governent rejected a plan for an international excavation and announced that it would undertake the work itself. Dust jacket present. First Edition.

The corners of the covers are slightly rubbed. The dust jacket is chipped with a tear to the top edge of its front panel & a short tear to its bottom edge. The top edges of the dust jacket flaps are darkened & there are several crossed-out red ink prices on the front flap. xlii & 374 pages. 9 pages of color illustrations & profuse photographic illustrations & diagrams in black & white. There is a small area of soiling to the bottom edge. Very good in a good dust wrapper.

ARTHUR LEONARD ROSS'S COPY, SIGNED BY YIGAEL YADIN - Quarto [approximately 10-1/4 inch high by 7-1/2 inches wide], black boards & off-white buckram in a price-clipped dust wrapper. The lower edges of the covers are slightly darkened. 272 pages, Profuse illustrations in color and black & white, including maps & plans. The page edges are slightly darkened. Very good. From the library of New York attorney Arthur Leonard Ross [d.1975], who was the legal representative in the U.S. for Emma Goldman as well as the attorney for the author Frank Harris. Inscribed and signed by military leader and archaeologist Yadin below Ross's bookplate: "With best wishes / Yigael Yadin". The bookplate is by Botho [Robert] Schmidt, engraved by Otto Ubbelahde. A sheet of heavier paper has been mounted over the front pastedown. The recessed bookplate is placed in the upper two-thirds of the sheet within a red frame. Below it, the author's inscription is penned within a second red frame. Dust jacket present.
