Inscribed to a friend by Bob Kaufman. Kaufman [1925-1986], born Robert Garnell Kaufman in New Orleans, was an American beat poet and surrealist. His jazz poetry had a large following in France where he was known as "the American Rimbaud". He briefly studied literature at the New School in New York, where he met William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. He moved to San Francisco in 1958 and remained there for most of the rest of his life. In 1959, he was a founder, along with Allen Ginsberg and others, of "Beatitude" magazine. A poet in the oral tradition whose work was inspired by jazz, Kaufman rarely wrote his poems down and much of his work was preserved by his second wife Eileen Singe. "I found his work to be essentially improvisational", said poet Jack Micheline, "and [it] was at its best when accompanied by a jazz musician. His technique resembled that of the surreal school of poets, ranging from a powerful, visionary lyricism of satirical, near dadistic leanings, to the more prophetic tone that can be found in his political poems". First Edition.
