"In 1927, Kent inherited almost $50,000 from the Banker estate. He was earning great sums, for an artist, through his combination of commercial and fine art. Though his expenses were high (not only was he the sole source of support for eight people, but others tapped his impulsive generosity), he was sure that they could afford a substantial farm.

After some searching, the perfect place was found. It lay far north of the Adirondack Mountains, just outside the small village of Au Sable Forks. The heart of the farm was an unusually level pasture of just over one hundred acres, with another two hundred acres of pine woods, hills and meadows. The edge of the property dropped steeply to the Au Sable River. Far off to the west stood the rugged form of Whiteface Mountain, while other blue peaks ranged the horizon....

Ever since his early reading of the Icelandic sagas, the Vikings had symbolized adventure, exploration, fearlessness. They too were farmers and they had conceived of paradise as a giant, glorious farm. In their honor Rockwell named his place Asgaard, 'The Farm of the Gods,' which he had painted in letters several feet high, across the face of his barn...."

Following the outbreak of World War II, Kent, a fervant anti-fascist, sought every means at his disposal to assist the war effort. "One thing he could do to help the war effort was to expand his dairy operation. The herd of quality Jerseys was doubled, the barn enlarged and a bottling operation set up so that he could sell directly to the public. He became both a feed and a farm machinery dealer to cut his own costs." By 1948, Kent, a long-time Socialist, had joined the Labor Party and threw his support behind the third-party presidential candidacy of Henry A. Wallace, former vice- president and cabinet official. "The citizens soon responded. Kent's effort to bottle and sell his dairy's own milk during the war had been expensive and time-consuming, but he was proud of the high quality, the efficiency and the success of his operation. He was only midly irritated when he received a letter from a customer stopping delivery because of Kent's politics....The next day ten more quit, then thirty, then seventy. Within a week over a hundred had joined the boycott. 'We don't want Russian milk,' said one." Driven by a Red-baiting local Catholic priest's accusation of Communism, several of Kent's employees soon quit as well. "There was only one thing to do. Rockwell called in the two loyal workers who had stuck with him and gave them the whole business--pasteurizer, cooler, washer, bottles, boiler and two new trucks. 'Take the whole thing,' he said. 'Change the name and move it off this place just as quick as you can. Spread the news and spread it quick!'

The news spread even farther than the Au Sable Valley. The wire services picked up the story and ran it coast to coast. Kent tried to see the bright side. In response to a letter of appreciation from Senator Glen Taylor, Wallace's running mate, he wrote that though the boycott had cost him almost $15,000 it had yielded many times that in good Wallace/Taylor publicity. 'It has been a good investment for peace.'

As a further contribution to peace the former dairy operator decided to run for Congress on the American Labor party ticket." -- David Traxel's "An American Saga: The Life and Times of Rockwell Kent".
