Edgcumbe, George. (1720-1795). A British naval officer, he was the first captain of the Salisbury. GEORGE EDGCUMBE FREE FRANK ON A COVER ADDRESSED TO A SAILOR ON THE SALISBURY AT PLIMOUTH. Circa 1750. 1750. Very good - Oblong 12mo [3-1/4 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide]. Cover addressed in black ink with the notation "free" signed "Geo. Edgcumbe" in the lower left corner. The cover is lightly soiled & slightly darkened with some small light red stains. There is small piece out of the top right corner & the bottom edge is chipped. There is a short tear through the signature, without loss. The cover is mounted on a slightly larger piece of card stock. Very good. The cover is addressed: "To / Lieut. Paul Curry / Of his Majesty's Ship the / Salisbury / at Plimouth [now called Plymouth]." George Edgcumbe, 1st Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, was a British peer, naval officer and politician. He was the first captain of the Salisbury, a fifty-gun ship-of-war, built at East Cowes, Isle of Wight, and launched on January 29, 1746. The Salisbury saw action during the War of Austrian Succession. After the end of the war in 1748, she became a guard ship at Plymouth until 1754. Edgcumbe held various political posts. He was promoted to admiral in 1778, was created Viscount Mount Edgcumbe and Valletort in 1781 and Vice-Admiral of Cornwall in 1782. Price:
