"Throughout its tumultuous 83-year career the late Nickel Plate Road was never really regarded as an enduring institution....Constructed in a matter of 500 days, the Nickel Plate connected Chicago and Buffalo with a 513-mile road characterized by long tangents, mild grades, and impressive bridges. It was built at great cost through a well-developed region already tapped by many railroads....Lacking even a modest reservoir of captive business, the railroad grubbed out a living in an intensely competitive transportation arena purely on the strength of the service it rendered. Hence this became a proposition dedicated to the science of moving high-grade freight with dependability and dispatch."--From the author's Introduction. Price:
