First edition of the author's first book, with a remarkable Autograph Letter Signed by Alexander Theroux as Alyosha, laid in. The letter is penned in blue ink by Theroux on 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide "Commonwealth of Virginia / Longwood College" stationery, with a pictorial logo in blue at the top. In his letter dated August 29, 1972, addressed to "Candida & Hy" Theroux states that "This is my copy of TW ....", obviously presenting them with his own copy of the book. He agrees to send them some of his "Trash" when he returns from Cape Cod, but in the meantime he suggests that they "read - and tell me if you'd like to represent me. I have stuff I want to unload." He's concerned that his second novel will need to justify itself as no one understands or likes it "which is, you see, why I banked on the quodbiblical preoccupations of -- imagine! -- a defrocked nun ...." Playfully signed "Alyosha", a nickname likely derived from the character in The Brothers Karamazov.
