- Octavo, red cloth titled in gilt on the spine & in gilt with a decorative gilt frame, a vignette & decorations stamped in gilt on the front cover. The top edge is gilt. The binding is lightly rubbed with some very light soiling & with 2 small black stains to the rear cover. The spine is slightly faded. ix, [ii], 329 & [1] pages. Illustrated with 23 black-and-white plates, including a frontispiece with a tissue guard. There is an owner's inscription on the flyleaf. There is a small area of staining to the bottom corners of the leaves in the first third of the book & the bottom edges of a few leaves are roughed with short tears & pieces out. Good. First edition.

- Octavo, brown cloth titled in gilt on the spine & in gilt within a decorative cream frame stamped on the front cover. The book is slightrly cocked. The covers are bumped with the bottom edges rubbed & with a tiny white mark to the rear cover. The head & tail of the spine are rubbed with the tail lightly chipped. Title, [iv], 412 & [1] pages. There is light offsetting to the endpapers with an owner's ink name & date on the front pastedown. There is soiling to the bottom edge & an ink stain to the top edge with small to tiny areas of ink staining to the top edges of the rear endpapers & the last 20 pages of the text. Despite its flaws, a very good, attractive copy. First edition. Boldly inscribed by the author on the front endpaper: "To James Carleton Young / From / Gertrude Atherton / November 21st 1904 / This book was commenced in the Adirondacks and finished in Munich after studies at first hand in Vienna, Budapest, Transylvania and Trieste". The author has left an ink blot on the word "From".
