(Wood, F.T.; President, Fifth Avenue Coach Company). PETITION OF FIFTH AVENUE COACH COMPANY / Before the Board of Estimate and Apportionment of the City of New York / In the Matter of The Application of Fifth Avenue Coach Company for a grant of the franchise, right and privilege to operate certain stage or omnibus routes in the Boroughs of Manhattan, Queens and The Bronx. Dated April 9, 1925. [New York]: 1925. 1925. Very good - Small quarto [10-1/2 inches high by 8 inches wide], softcover bound in printed cream wraps. The wraps are bumped & soiled. 45 pages plus a large map of Manhattan, Queens & the Bronx, unfolding to 28 inches high by 56 inches wide, of existing & proposed bus lines at 5-cent & 10-cent fares. The map, which is tipped onto the rear endpaper, is in excellent condition. The front edges of the endpaper & the last leaf of the text are roughed & there is a piece out of the endpaper where the map is glued to it. Very good. The Fifth Avenue Coach Company and Surface Transit originated in 1885 as Fifth Avenue Transportation Company, Limited, an operator of horse-and-omnibus transit. Following the company's foreclosure in 1896, its successor company Fifth Avenue Coach Company began operating electric buses along its route and pioneered the motorbus, developing and building its own buses to replace the horse-drawn carriages.
