Burges, Bartholomew. A SHORT ACCOUNT OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM, AND OF COMETS IN GENERAL: Together with a Particular Account of the Comet That Will Appear in 1789. The Second Edition, Corrected. Boston: Printed by B. Edes & Son, No. 7 State-Street, 1789. 1789. Very good - Small octavo [6 inches high by 3-3/4 inches wide], softcover bound in early, possibly original gray wrappers restitched with tan cord. The wraps are chipped & stained. 17 & [2] pages plus a blank. The front edges of 2 pages are chipped. There is scattered foxing & the page corners are bumped. Despite its flaws, the text is generally clean & bright. Very good. Evans 21722. Neither the "large plate" nor the volvelle which are referenced in the text, pages 17 and [18], are present. We have been unable to verify the accuracy of the following statement by the American Antiquarian Society: "The first edition was evidently issued with the diagram of the solar system, and the second edition with the diagram and accompanying volvelle; however no copy of the second edition with the diagram and volvelle has been located". The book is dedicated to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and to the Philosophical Society of Pennsylvania. Following the text is a one-page prospectus for the author's upcoming new work "The American Seaman's Daily Assistant". Rare. Price:
