The rear wrap is lacking, the spine is perished & the front wrap is chipped, darkened & partially detached with small stains & pieces out. 40 pages, including an annual financial report on the last page. The contents are shaken. There is a light vertical crease to each leaf. The top page corners are lightly bumped & there are small pieces out of the top corners of 3 leaves. There is occasional foxing. Good working copy. First edition. George Washington Bethune was an eminent divine of the Reformed Dutch Church. He served as minister of the Reformed Dutch Church in Rhinebeck, NY, moved to Utica and Philadelphia and in 1859 was appointed to the church at Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. In 1859, he suffered a severe seizure resulting in a temporary coma, and these papers concern his appointment to the Brooklyn Church and his request to the Consistory for a leave of absence so that he could go abroad for rest and recuperation. This request was refused, leading to Bethune's regretful resignation. He left for Florence, Italy in 1861 and died there in 1862. He is best remembered for a number of the hymns he wrote. Price:
