Blanche Willis Howard [aka Blanche W. Teufel] was a best-selling American novelist who lived for most of her working life in southern Germany. "One Summer" [Boston, 1875], set in a coastal town in Maine, was her breakthrough novel. In 1877, she went to Germany on assignment for the Boston Evening Transcript and remained there for the rest of her life, settling in Stuttgart and opening a finishing school for young girls. She married Baron von Teufel, the court physician to King Charles I of Wurttemberg. She was the author of fourteen works, most of them novels.
