2 (Cage, John; David, Michael, Goldberg, Michael, Grooms, Red, Jacquette, Yvonne; Leslie, Alfred; Schwartz, Barbara; Burckhardt, Rudy; Shapiro, David; and de Kooning, Elaine). [THE ELAINE DE KOONING MEMORIAL PORTFOLIO. A limited edition portfolio consisting of 10 original works of art, each signed by the artist].
1991.
- Folio, 10 original works of art laid into a 31-1/2 inch high by 25-1/4 inch wide folding clam shell tray case bound in sumptuous burgundy silk and titled "E. de K." in gilt on the front cover. Published as a memorial to Elaine de Kooning, the case houses the following original works of art:

1) Cage, John. VARIATIONS II. 1991. An original monotype on handmade paper SIGNED and numbered by John Cage. The 26 inch high by 19 inch wide monotype was printed by Paul Mullowney at the Crown Point Press with the assistance of Lawrence Hamlin, Lothar Osterburg & Mari Andrews. "VARIATIONS II" is one of an edition of 36 UNIQUE prints on smoked Roma Sarto paper. Using a method which John Cage has employed often in the past, each sheet of paper was dampened then used to smother wads of newspaper set aflame. The result is a smoked pattern with pieces of residual ash and newsprint stuck to the paper. Every effort was made to ensure that the ash and excess pieces will adhere permanently to the surface (sizing was applied to each print for this purpose), but the artist was happy to accept the possibility that the prints would change with time.

Cage used chance operations based on the I-Ching to determine the placement of either a ring or a bar on each print. When the position was determined, using a grid, the artist then 'branded' the print with the hot metal object. The I-Ching was also used to regulate the length of time that the metal was left on the paper. The result is that each print has either the ring or the line in varying degrees of darkness burned into the surface. The possibility of neither object falling on the paper was also left to chance so that some prints are not branded at all but have only the original smoke, charcoal and debris from the earlier process.

2) De Kooning, Elaine. UNTITLED LITHOGRAPH. 1991. An original lithograph stamped "E. de K." in black under the image and with "Estate of Elaine de Kooning" stamped in blind at the bottom right of the print. The 27-1/4 inch high by 23-1/4 inch wide lithograph is one of an edition of 20 printed posthumously at Trestle Editions Ltd. by Master Printer Bruce Porter with Edvard Lieber acting as consultant. At the time of her death, Elaine de Kooning was working on a series of images illustrating the "Book of Genesis", commissioned by Limited Editions. This image, as yet untitled, was the only one of the series that Elaine de Kooning had completed for the printer.

3) Leslie, Alfred. PORTRAIT OF ROBERT SCULL. 1991. An original relief print boldly titled in red above the image and SIGNED in red below by Alfred Leslie. The 22 inch high by 20 inch wide relief print is one of an edition of 60 printed by Joe Wilfer at the Spring Street Workshop, courtesy of Pace Prints. The image is a single color line engraving printed in relief. The original drawing is created on mylar, then exposed to a photosensitive metal plate. The negative areas are etched chemically. The remaining relief produces the images.

4) Schwartz, Barbara. E de K PRESCOTYPES. 1991. An original monotype SIGNED and dated in pencil by the artist. The 23-1/2 inch high by 23-1/2 inch wide monotype was produced on handmade paper pulp created at the Dieu Donne Papermill by Master Papermaker Paul Wong. This series of "prescotypes" is made entirely of handmade paper pulp to which dry pigments have been added. Each area of color has been applied separately to a dark gray base sheet of paper. The entire image is created in wet pulp which then dries and fuses as a single sheet of paper. They were made at Dieu Donne Papermill in New York City, and the artist was assisted by Paul Wong who is the master papermaker there.

5) David, Michael. AN UNTITILED MONOTYPE. 1991. An original monotype SIGNED by Michael David. The 20 inch high by 20 inch wide color monotype was printed by Jon McCafferty. Each print is UNIQUE, a combination of etching and encaustic (hot wax) applied with a palette knife.

6) Goldberg, Michael. AN UNTITLED SILKSCREEN. 1991. An original silkscreen SIGNED and dated by Michael Goldberg. This 19-1/4 inch high by 21 inch wide silkscreen is one of an edition of 20 printed by Larry Wright. The name "Elaine" is hand written in various crayons onto the sheet.

7) Grooms, Red. ELAINE AT THE CEDAR BAR. 1991. An original stratograph SIGNED, dated and numbered by Red Grooms. The 30-1/4 inch high by 22 inch wide stratograph is one of an edition of 50 printed by Joe Wilfer at the Spring Street Workshop, courtesy of Pace Prints. This stratograph is a one color relief print which is made by printing a collage made of layered tracing paper.

8) Jacquette, Yvonne. OPERATION DESERT STORM. 1991. An original photogravure print SIGNED, dated and numbered by Yvonne Jacquette. The 30 inch high by 23 inch wide photogravure is one of an edition of 60 printed by Paul Taylor at the Rhode Island School of Design. The original drawing which depicts a passenger's view of the wing of a military airplane in flight was created on mylar plate and then transferred photographically to a copper plate. The etching was cooled on the plate to deepen the tones. Chine colle, the application of paper glued to the piece as it is run through the press, is visible on the airplane wings.

9) Shapiro, David. AFTER. 1991. An original broadside poem SIGNED in full and dated 1991. The 27 inch high by 20 inch wide broadside is titled "After" at the top and dedicated "In Memory of Elaine de Kooning".

10) Burckhardt, Rudy. AN ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF ELAINE DE KOONING AND WILLEM DE KOONING IN HIS STUDIO. 1991. Numbered under the image at left and SIGNED in ink at right by Rudy Burchardt. The 11 inch high by 20 inch wide black & white photograph is mounted onto a 20 inch high by 23 inch wide white mat. The image depicts the young dark haired Elaine de Kooning standing arms crossed with a pencil in her hand on the right of the young vibrant and seductive Willem de Kooning. Tubes of paint are laid out on a table barely viewed between them. An abstract painting on canvas is in the backgound. The photographer, filmmaker and painter Rudy Burckhardt (1914-1999) was particularly known for his iconic portraits of artists in their studios.
