Major General Albert C. Smith, Chief of Military History, writes in his foreword to this checklist: "In covering the period from the end of the Civil War through World War II, this compilation of references to [U.S. Army] unit histories serves as an indispensable guide to the majority of published accounts in this field....Within these pages, the reader will find the record of historical efforts that began in the 1860's, grew with the wars of the century's turn, rose to new heights in World War I, and reached their crest in our time with the epic struggles of World War II. All types of unit histories are represented, from the illustrated company roster, or the commemorative leaflet prepared for a special occasion, to the colossal division combat histories ending with V-E and V-J Day, 1945." Though the Korean War is not mentioned in the foreword, Dornbusch expanded his preliminary 1950 checklist to cover that conflict.
