Le Cain, Errol. ORIGINAL PEN & INK WITH GOUACHE DRAWING. Circa [1980]. [1980]. Fine - The superb 11 inch high by 16 inch wide image painted on art paper depicts a fantastical and whimsical construction scene viewed behind a barbed wire topped fence. The scene is eerily reminiscent of German Expressionist art with somewhat unsettling mechanical equipment composed in juxtaposition to mundane objects. A front loader is set on a pedal operated baby's pram covered by a parasol. The great mechanical cranes grow like arms from a slim-waisted building at the top of which perches a room which serves as the creature's head. Large scissors extend from the top of a carriage carrying the leafy trees it has cut down, giving it the appearance of a grounded bird with its leafy wings and scissor beak. Posters are mounted on the fence behind which these activities take place. An unsigned, well-executed and finished watercolor. Near fine. Errol John Le Cain (1941-1987). Book Illustrator & Film Animator. Born in Singapore and travelled extensively in the Far East, living 5 years in India. From 1960-1967 Le Cain worked on animated films in the Richard Williams Studio."As a book illustrator, LeCain has developed a distinctive style in which outline and pattern are dominant elements. He aims to create bold, simple designs (retaining relevant detail) that can be dramatic or humorous, and adapts his style to the varying moods of the stories. He uses pen and ink, with gouache for color work." --Peppin & Micklethwait. "Book Illustrators of the Twentieth Century". Among LeCain's numerous illustrated books are "The Snow Queen" (1979), Helen Cresswell's "The Beachcombers" (1972), "The Dragon Kite" (1974), Brian Patten's "The Sly Cormorant and the Fishes" (1977), etc. Price:
