- Small quarto [5-1/2 inches high by 5-3/4 inches wide] bound with a green silk ribbon between a front cover consisting of 4 layers of textured tan paper & a cardboard rear board, with a decorative black-and-white printed label on the front cover & with color vignettes stamped on both sides of the rear board. [29] pages plus colophon printed in French fold. 27 pages of illustrations, including 16 vivid tipped-in plates in color and 8 full-page illustrations in black-and-white. There is a crease to the bottom corner of the outer layer of textured paper, else this beautiful little book with its brilliant illustrations is in fine condition. Together with the Diaz Icon mailing envelope. Signed by David Diaz on the title page. Laid in are two copies of the artist's business card and a signed letter typed on his cream letterhead with vignettes in purple at the head and foot of the sheet. Diaz writes: "...Perhaps we can all get together again soon. In the mean time enclosed is a copy of my promo book which contains twentyfour illustrations, two of which are from Smoky Night...." Signed "Warm regards...David Diaz". David Diaz worked for the sculptor Duane Hanson for several years. After graduating from Ft. Lauderdale Art Institute, he moved to southern California and worked for graphic design companies before establishing his own design and illustration business, Diaz Icon. "Smoky Night", his first picture book, was awarded the 1995 Caldecott Medal.
