Georgi Dimitrov [1882-1949] was a Bulgarian Communist leader. In 1933 he was arrested in Berlin for alleged complicity in setting the Reichstag fire. During the Leipzig Trial, his calm conduct of his defense and the accusations he directed at his prosecutors won him world renown. Secret negotiations won his release and allowed him to leave for the Soviet Union where he was awarded Soviet citizenship. His massive popularity made him an asset to Joseph Stalin's regime and he was appointed General Secretary of the Comintern from 1934 until its dissolution in 1943. After the war, he returned to Bulgaria to head the Communist party there, becoming Premier in 1946. His interest in creating a Balkan Communist Federation and his alliance with Tito later caused a falling out with Stalin who regarded the proposed federation as an obstacle to his desire for total control of the Eastern Bloc. Dimitrov's sudden decline in health and his death in 1949 even gave rise to unconfirmed speculation that he had been poisoned by the Soviets.
