- Octavo, maroon cloth titled in gilt on the spine. The binding is rubbed & bumped with some light stains to the front cover. The spine is faded with the head & tail lightly chipped. viii & pages [9]-495 plus 8-page publisher's catalog. Illustrated with 6 black-and-white engravings after original photographs, including a frontispiece with a tissue guard. Good. The author travels west and east and gives extensive accounts of the lives and beliefs of the Mormons and the Shakers. The frontispiece is a view of Salt Lake City. From the library of Civil War veteran Louis Livingston.

- 8vo, brown cloth (bumped & rubbed; spine faded; small dent to top edge of front cover) titled in gilt (somewhat faded) with frames & decorations stamped in blind on both covers. xix & 424 pp. (pencil name & white ink name on front endpaper with offsetting to pastedown; scattered foxing; small stains to fore-edge with tiny stains to front edges of a number of pages). Good. In his first chapter, the author writes that Spedding's new edition of Bacon's work "has drawn men's thoughts to the character of Bacon as painted by his foes; and the instinct, strong as virtue, to reject that spume of satire and falsehood, has sprung at the voice of Mr. Spedding into lusty life. To aid in some small part in this good work of obtaining from men of letters and science a reconsideration of the evidence on which true judgement will have to run, the new facts, the new letters, the new documentary illustrations comprised in this Review of the Personal History of Lord Bacon are given to the world."
