Douglas, Lester. PLUM-PUDDING ISLAND; AND HOW IT WAS DISCOVERED. Washington, D.C.: Printed for Lester Douglas by Otis H. Johnson at the Printing House of Rufus H. Darby, 1943. 1943. Very good A UNIQUE COPY DESIGNED & SIGNED BY LESTER DOUGLAS WITH 2 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS BY RALPH PATTERSON - A special unique copy of this book, consisting of a first edition of "Plum-Pudding Island; and How It Was Discovered", bound in the original octavo stitched green paper wraps with a printed paper label on the front cover. The 24 page book, printed in red, green and black, is profusely illustrated by Ralph Patterson. A pictorial book label with Greetings from Mickey, Peter, and Lester Douglas is tipped-in at the front and the book is signed in full by Lester Douglas on the colophon page. This book is itself housed in a green paper sleeve mounted onto the inside cover of a larger quarto book. This 12 inch high by 9 inch wide quarto book is bound in stitched purple wraps with a pictorial green, red & cream paper label mounted on the front cover. Bound within the book are 4 leaves, including 2 sheets of heavy brown stock upon which are mounted 2 original pen & ink drawings by Ralph Patterson. Drawn on small white board, the drawings are each framed by heavy green stock before mounting onto the pages. Notes written in pencil on the first creamy page appear to be by Lester Douglas. These notes state that: "Enclosed: Two Original Scratch-Board Drawings by Ralph Patterson for 'Plum Pudding Island', LD's Christmas Book for 1943 - LD found the story in his first edition copy of 'Punch's Snapdragons for Christmas,' London, 1845. Also a Special Copy Bound by LD." A note penciled on the sleeve containing the smaller book states that this is a "Special Copy Bound and Signed by LD". The pictorial Christmas Greetings label is mounted on the sleeve. The colophon from the printed edition of the book is additionally mounted on the last page of creamy paper contained within the unique quarto volume. There is but the slightest creasing and soiling to the wraps.Lester Douglas (1894-1961) worked as an assistant editor for American Magazine, as a freelance typographical consultant and as a partner in a New York advertising agency before becoming the Director of Art and Printing for the Chamber of Commerce of the United States.
