In their catalog essay, Eleanor Dwight and Viola Hopkins Winner point out that Edith Wharton's career was launched with the publication "The Decoration of Houses", her first book, co-written with her architect friend Ogden Codman. Her taste in art, architecture and decoration was developed through her travels in Europe and her friendships with French and American artists and writers while living in Paris. This exhibition assembled more than one hundred art objects and literary artifacts which "bring to life her remarkable personality and the milieu of her cosmopolitan society".
