1 (Roosevelt, Eleanor). A VINTAGE 1943 ORIGINAL NEWS PHOTOGRAPH DEPICTING FIRST LADY ELEANOR ROOSEVELT WITH MRS. BARNEY ROSS.
1943. 1943. Very good
- The 9 inch high by 7-1/8 inch wide black & white photograph depicts First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt greeting Mrs. Barney Ross. The two women are identified in pencil on the verso and the date "Mar 16, 1943" is also stamped on the verso. This was an editorial copy used for publication. White and black crop marks have been penned in with grease pen, with an editorial notation stating "2 col 1st Wed" penned at the top and the number "74" at the bottom. The bottom right corner of the photograph is creased with a lighter crease to the bottom left corner. An uncommon photograph of the First Lady, mostly in rear profile, with Mrs. Barney Ross. Mrs Ross was likely the wife of the welterweight boxing champion Barney Ross, who served with distinction in World War II, and was later called to testify before the Warren Commission due to his acquaintance with Jack Ruby.

3 Truman, Harry; Eisenhower, Dwight D.; Roosevelt, Eleanor; etc. THE ORIGINAL SICK ROOM GUEST LOG OF WILLIAM HASSETT, CORRESPONDENCE SECRETARY TO PRESIDENT HARRY TRUMAN, SIGNED BY PRESIDENT TRUMAN, DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER AND ELEANOR ROOSEVELT, AMONG OTHERS.
Washington, D.C., June 30- August 4, 1947. 1947. Very good
SIGNED BY DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER, ELEANOR ROOSEVELT, & HARRY TRUMAN AS PRESIDENT - A witty little guest log, measuring 5-7/8 inches in height by 4-7/8 inches in width, presented to Harry Truman's correspondence secretary William D. Hassett by Harry Truman's presidential physician Wallace Graham and his wife Velma, signed by them on the presentation page. Bound with a thin leather tie into pictorial paper wrappers titled "Ye Sicke-Roome Guest Log" and illustrated with a color vignette of a bear lying in a sick bed. The following is additionally penned in ink on the front cover "Walter Reed Gen'l Hospital / June 30 - August 4, 1947 / William D. Hassett". Despite its playful childish appearance, the guest log's printed text has adult content. The opening paragraph belies its appearance: "Speak not about thy troubles here thou blistering sissy-prissle, for if thou can'st not spread the cheer then kindly hold thy whistle...." Following the presentation leaf, the contents include 3 pages of ruled paper, in French fold, intended for the signatures of visitors. Indeed 53 autographs are contained within and another 8 visitors have signed the rear cover, these last 8 having signed following a luncheon at Shangri-La on July 25, 1947. Signed in ink by Eleanor Roosevelt and members of her family who visited William Hassett on July 14th, Dwight D. Eisenhower on July 23, and President Harry Truman on August 1st. A unique item with strong bold signatures. Very good.

William D. Hassett was correspondence secretary to President Truman.

Others who signed the guest log include the White House's Assistant Naval Aide William M. Rigdon, Lt. Col. William K. St. Claire, Bryce A. Newbaker, M.D., as well as Chandler, Elliott, and Elliott Roosevelt, Jr. who accompanied Eleanor to William Hassett's bedside.
