The covers are heavily bumped with the cloth worn off the bottom edges & the head & tail of the spine are chipped. 111 pp. 50 full-page B&W illustrations from drawings by Louis Lupas. The page edges are darkened. Lupas's striking portraits, slightly darkened at the margins, come across vividly, in spite of the condition of the book. First edition. One-page impressions of musicians with brief biographies and comments on their work, each accompanied by a portrait by Louis Lupas. Included are conductors, pianists, singers and violinists--among them, Toscanini, Myra Hess, Roland Hayes, Chaliapin, Jascha Heifetz, Walter Gieseking and Paul Robeson.
