1 Gish, Lillian (1893-1993). "First Lady" of the Silent Screen. TYPED NOTE SIGNED expressing her best wishes for the forthcoming New Year to her good friend Jean Dalrymple.
Postmarked from New York City, December 29, 1983. 1983. Fair
- Sixteen words typed on a 7 inch high by 5 inch wide sheet of Christmas themed note paper illustrated with color vignette of a small bear, christmas tree in his arms, pulling a bird across the snow on his brightly colored scarf. Signed "Lillian" in black ink. The note is folded horizontally through Lillian Gish's signature with short tears at both ends of the fold. The note was mounted at some time in the past onto a 10-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide sheet of white paper in an effort to reinforce it and prevent the tear from spreading to the signature.

Together with the original mailing envelope addressed to Jean Dalrymple.

The American stage, screen and television actress Lillian Gish's career spanned 75 years. A prominent star of the silent screen era, she acted and starred in the films of D.W. Griffith, including his seminal work "Birth of a Nation". Her later talky roles included "Duel in the Sun" and "Night of the Hunter". She was named among the greatest female stars by the American Film Institute and awarded an honorary Academy Award in 1971.

The recipient Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center and a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.
