1 Berg, Alban (1885-1935). Austrian composer of 20th century music whose compositions were influenced by the Romanticism of Gustav Mahler and Arnold Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, addressed to the Austrian Composer and Conductor Hans Pless, making mention of his "Macbeth".
[December 28, 1925]. 1925]. Very good
- Two pages with over 100 words penned in German on both sides of an 8-3/8 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide sheet of buff colored paper. The composer's name and address are faintly stamped in light blue at top left of the first page. In his letter addressed to the Austrian composer and conductor Hans Pless, Berg thanks him for his letter and mentions that he is anxious to get to know Pless's Macbeth. The following excerpts are translated from the German Fractur handwriting: "I, too, was sorry that you were not present. It would have meant a great deal to me." Berg is quite probably referring to the premiere of his opera Wozzeck which took place on December 14, 1925, two weeks before the date of this letter. Berg goes on to say, "I am very anxious to get to know your Macbeth. As soon as I come to Vienna and catch my breath after all my unavoidable obligations, we must get together for that wonderful purpose. Or perhaps we will see each other at the Volksoper when you conduct...." Signed "Alban Berg". Folded once horizontally for mailing, there are tiny tears to the edges of the fold. Very good.

A member of the Second Viennese School with Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern, Alban Berg (1885-1935) was an Austrian composer of 20th century music whose compositions were influenced by the Romanticism of Gustav Mahler and his teacher Arnold Shcoenberg's twelve-tone technique. He is perhaps best remembered for his Violin Concerto and his operas "Wozzeck" and "Lulu", the latter about a prostitute who crosses paths with Jack the Ripper. Although he finished the first 2 acts, Berg died before completing Lulu.

The Austrian composer and conductor Hans Pless (1884-1966) collaborated with Daniel Ruyneman in setting up an organization to promote performances of new music in Europe and the US.

An English translation of the letter is included.
