Mencken notes that religious interests and controversies are much in evidence in this volume and that controversies such as that over teaching evolution in schools have been hotly debated since the Scopes trial in the summer of 1924. Race and the Klu Klux Klan, women's rights and drink are other topics that surface here: a fascinating overview of what exercised American minds at the time.
