A collection of American newspaper cuttings, about half of them from readers of the American Mercury, of which Mencken was the editor, and the rest from friends, from "more or less serious students of American psychology", and from Mencken's own collection. Mencken notes that religious interests and controversies are much in evidence in this volume and that controversies such as that over teaching evolution in schools have been hotly debated since the Scopes trial in the summer of 1924. Race and the Klu Klux Klan, women's rights and drink are other topics that surface here: a fascinating overview of what exercised American minds at the time.
