"The Waiting Supper", as it first appears here, varies substantilly from the later published edition. Richard Little Purdy states in his book "Thomas Hardy: A Bibliographical Study" that, "When 'The Waiting Supper' was collected, one episode in VII was changed significantly, and the ominous arrival of Bellston's portmanteau substituted for the appearance of the man himself and his talk with Christine." -- [Purdy, page 152].

From the Library of Charles Scott-Moncrieff, signed by him on the front endpaper: "Charles Scott-Moncrieff / Lanark / January 1909".
