Mackenzie & Harris, Inc. THE HISTORY OF TYPE & PRINTING IN EASY LESSONS. Embellished with effigies of some of the practitioners in this ancient Art. San Francisco, CA: (Grabhorn Press). (1948). (1948). Very good - Quarto [13-1/4 inches high by 9-5/8 inches wide], softcover. The contents are laid into printed gray wraps. The spine & extremities are darkened & the spine is chipped with small splits at the head & tail. The wraps are bumped with light soiling to the rear wrap. 6 broadsides printed in black & red, each illustrated with a vignette in black & white by Mallette Dean. The corners of the broadsides are lightly bumped. Very good in a good portfolio. "Imprinted for Mackenzie & Harris, Inc., Typographers and Type Founders since 1915". The portfolio was printed at the Grabhorn Press in an edition of 3,000 copies. In a note on the inside wrap, Mackenzie & Harris write: "Enclosed within this portfolio are reprints of the first six of a series of advertisements that we are currently running in Western Advertising." The series, which is titled "From Gutenberg to Grabhorn" consists of short "first-person" autobiographical essays by famous printers which are "historically correct, although whimsical in their method of presentation". This portfolio includes Johann Gutenberg, Peter Schoeffer, Nicolas Jenson, William Caxton, Aldus and Robert Estienne. Price:
