Good - Octavo, softcover. The contents are bound between yellow cover sheets with cream cord. The book is housed in a folding teal paper covered case with ivory clasps & with a pictorial black-and-white label on the front panel & a printed label on the spine. The binding is lightly soiled. The case is rubbed & chipped with the panels partially detached from the spine. vii, [2] leaves & 177 pages printed in French fold. Illustrated with a frontispiece on tan stock by Shoshu Saito and with black-and-white plates & full-page & textual illustrations after sketches by Genjiro Kataoka and Lafcadio Hearn. The bottom margins of the pages are slightly rippled and there is light dampstaining to the last 40 pages. Good in a fair case. Third printing. An account of the time Hearn spent as a professor at the Imperial University in Japan and a defense of Hearn against charges that his books on Japan were unreliable because he could not read Japanese or speak it fluently.
