SUMPTUOUSLY BOUND BY SANKORSKI & SUTCLIFFE FOR J.W. ROBINSON CO. - Octavo, sumptuoulsy bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe for J.W. Robinson Company in reddish-hued brown calf titled and decorated in gilt on the front cover and the spines, with the black rules framing the raised bands flowing from the spine to the covers to expand into delicate floral devices. All edges are gilt. The book is housed in a floral patterned slipcase matching the book's endpapers. The slipcasse is slightly soiled. 297 & [1] pages, illustrated throughout by Hugh Thomson. The discreet book label of J.W. Robinson Co. is mounted at the top of the rear blank. A beautiful near fine book. A lovely binding signed in gilt on the leather at the bottom of the front pastedown: "Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London, England for J.W. Robinson Company". With headquarters in Los Angeles, the J.W. Robinson Co. was a chain of department stores in the Southern California and Arizona region. A carriage-trade chain it was part of the Associated Dry Goods Family of stores. It was subsequently acquired by the May Department Stores in the 1980's. Price:

The price-clipped dw is soiled, chipped & darkened with short tears repaired with scotch tape. The dw spine is heavily darkened & stained & there are pencil notes on the rear flap. xx & 269 pp. There are ink notations on 1 page of the bibliography. Color frontispiece, 11 color plates, 16 B&W plates & B&W textual illustrations. Very good in a fair dw. First edition.
